CHAPTER 15
A WAKING DREAM
Eva had never known how vast a desert could be, and the Bralden desert in particular was enormous. On and on it stretched, as far as the eye could see, as they continued their flight towards Weston Ridgeâtheir second day of travel after the storm. Oliver had helped Eva repair what was left of Perrellâs liter. It was far from perfect, but at least it was secure enough for her to ride in it again.
They had used her knapsack and some of the ropes to fashion a safety harness of sorts, which attached her to Perrellâs harness in case the litter broke again, and the dragons were flying low over the ground as a precaution should they need to make another emergency landing. They also had decided before they even took off that if it rained again, or if the winds grew too strong, they would stop in case their repairs didnât holdâbut Eva still felt tense as they soared along.
Perhaps it was because they had been flying much faster over the past two days, trying to make up for lost time after the storm. And despite Eva knowing in her head that she was safe, the speed of the flight was enough to make her anxiously remember the fall, no matter how many times she told herself that she was safe.
When she wasnât preoccupied with the thought of falling, Eva felt preoccupied with the visions sheâd had, and the way she felt in the aftermath. She feltâ¦different. Not ill or unsteady, but changed. Her senses felt heightened; as she looked out over the desert horizon, it felt like she could see every rock, every crevice, every shadow from the climbing sun, and every shifting grain of sandâclearly and easilyâdespite their height and rapid speed. Also, she kept catching glimpses of some kind of light in the corner of her vision, as if there were streams of light glowing deep within the earth, but every time she started to see them and tried to look at them directly, they vanished from her sight.
She didnât know what was happening to herâbut she knew it scared her. She tried to convince herself that it was all her imagination, that the intense heat that beat down on them from the sun above and radiated off the ground below was affecting her, that this was some trick of her eyes. A mirage. A fantasy. Maybe even a delusion.
Eva didnât possess magic. The memory that seemed to have returned to herâ¦it had to be nothing more than a dream. It would have been impossible for her to enter the stone circle, just as it was also impossible for her to have enhanced senses, and for her to see things that werenât there. This truly couldnât be happening, and yetâ¦
The sands were full of strands of light.
The group continued to fly late into the evening, the dragons pushing themselves harder than they needed to as the desert stretched on before them. Finally, when
